Martial chooses new club
Anthony Martial has signed for Greek club AEK Athens, following his departure from Manchester United earlier this year.
Martial announced his exit from the Reds in May, after nine seasons with the club. The France international made 317 appearances for United, scoring 90 goals. He sits 25th in our all-time goalscoring list, between Lou Macari and David Beckham.
The 28-year-old won the FA Cup, EFL Cup and Europa League during his time in England and was also named our Players’ Player of the Year in 2019/20, at the end of a campaign where he hit the net on 23 occasions.
Transfers you may have missed this summer
ArticleFrom De Gea to Zaha, several former Reds swapped clubs in the close season.
“Manchester United will always be in my heart,” he wrote, when announcing that he was leaving.
“This club has left its mark on my career and offered me an incredible opportunity to play in front of you. I'm leaving to take on new challenges, I'll always be a Red Devil and I'll continue to follow the club's results with passion.”
Martial, who didn’t feature for Erik ten Hag’s side after December last year, due to injury, will now join the Athens giants, who sit top of the Super League Greece table after four games.
AEK have several former Premier League players in their squad, including ex-Tottenham winger Erik Lamela and erstwhile Watford pair Nordin Amrabat – brother of Sofyan – and Roberto Pereyra.
Matias Almeyda’s side were champions in 2023 and finished second last season, behind PAOK, who United will face in the Europa League in November.
There will, however, be no European football for Martial this term as AEK were eliminated from the Conference League at the play-off stage, by Armenian outsiders FC Noah.
We’d like to wish Anthony the best of luck in his new venture, in Greece.
