Valencia: I thank Manchester for the love

Monday 15 May 2023 14:39

Former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia was back at Old Trafford on Saturday, as the Reds defeated Wolves in the Premier League.

Contrary to the norm, weather conditions in Manchester almost emulated that of his native Ecuador for the fixture, as the sun beat down on the Theatre of Dreams.

Goals from Anthony Martial and the returning Alejandro Garnacho sealed the win for the Reds, ensuring Valencia and the other United supporters went away happy.

Following the victory, Antonio shared a message on his Instagram account, appreciating the kind welcome he received at the stadium he called home between 2009 and 2019.

"It was a wonderful day," he began. "I really enjoyed today’s game, receiving the love from the fans is priceless.

"I thank Manchester for the love towards me, the respect and admiration is mutual, this city will always mean a lot in my life."

His message was accompanied by a video of Garnacho's celebration, after the young Argentinian put the result beyond doubt late on.

The former Ecuador international also shared an image of himself walking around Old Trafford, along with the caption: "I wish a very nice week to everyone."

Valencia's appearance at the Theatre of Dreams was a welcome one, and one that we hope occurs again, sooner rather than later.

It goes without saying that we do indeed love you too, Antonio.

As well as watching United win, Valencia was delighted to spend time with legendary Manchester United receptionist Kath Phipps, who started working here under Sir Matt Busby in 1968.

Today, she is the first face you see at Carrington and has been like a mum to generations of players.

"It's nice to hug this nice person," wrote Antonio on Instagram alongside the photo above. "She has always treated me well and I appreciate her love."

In the comments section, Scott McTominay wrote "Top picture" and Juan Mata posted "The best", highlighting Kath's enduring popularity.
