Fernandes: Wolves game was a must-win

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes has underlined the importance of the Reds getting back to winning ways and securing all three points against Wolves.

United endured back-to-back defeats at Brighton and West Ham but hit back upon our return to Old Trafford, enjoying a 2-0 success on home soil.

Fernandes played a part in the goals scored by Anthony Martial and substitute Alejandro Garnacho – providing the assist for the second – and was named Man of the Match for his overall contribution to what he says was a “must-win” match following our recent losses, and in the context of the top-four race.

Fernandes: I knew Martial would score today!

Bruno Fernandes jokes about how he knew Anthony Martial would score against Wolves, while reviewing United's win...

“It was a must-win because we know that we need points to get the position we want to get the top four,” Fernandes told MUTV post-match.

“We did our job properly and that's why we got the three points.
“They [Wolves] are a really smart team, they defend really well. They are compact, it's difficult to go through their lines. They have quality on the ball,” he added.

“They have players with pace up front and they are really good technically, so we had to be aware of the counters, we had to be aware when they had the ball, we had to have the right press on them.

“So, I think we did really well, [it was] a professional performance and that's why we get the points.”

Anthony Martial and substitute Alejandro Garnacho score the goals to earn a crucial win.

Martial’s first-half opener set United on the way to the bounce-back triumph, and in his post-match chat with Stewart Gardner, Fernandes joked about why he knew the Frenchman would get on the scoresheet this afternoon.

“I knew he was going to score today because he had his haircut with our barber," Bruno added in jest.

“Every time he gets his haircut with him, he gets his goal. So, I will call him [the barber] every time now to go the day before the game to cut his hair because we need this Anthony. We need the Anthony that scores goals, that gives us a lot of quality on the ball and creates a lot of space for others.

“So, I'm really pleased for his goal and also for seeing [Alejandro] Garnacho getting back to the games and getting his goal too.”

We've picked out seven of the key takeaways after United's win over Wolves in the Manchester sunshine.

Bruno and co are now six points away from securing a return to the Champions League for next season, with three games still to play.

Two of those fixtures come at Old Trafford – versus Chelsea and Fulham – but before then, a trip to Bournemouth awaits, and it’s a game that Fernandes says United should have the belief to win despite our tough recent fortunes on the road.

“I'm confident also to go away from home because we know how good we are,” Bruno insisted.

“We have to go to Bournemouth and think that we will go there to win the game because we have quality to do that.

“The away fans are amazing too. They have been there in every game. They've been helping us in every game and we have to get a good result for them because we travel a lot all around England, so we have to we have to give something back to them.”
