Why Bruno made a beeline for one fan in Bournemouth

Monday 22 May 2023 15:40

In the moments after Saturday’s win at Bournemouth, Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes made a beeline for our magnificent away end and, specifically, one inspiring fan.

Our Portuguese midfielder was keen to applaud the supporters who had made the long, long journey to the south coast for our final away match of the season.

Bruno had another motive, too.

After stepping over the advertising hoardings, Fernandes passed his match-worn shirt to a lifelong Red named Jordan Pilkington, who has inspired so many people around the club this last week.

Pilkington became a Manchester United member at age three and has been a season ticket holder for 12 years, attending home and away matches across the country with his dad Zane.

In 2019, Jordan was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and, aged 22 at the time, he became one of youngest people to suffer from MND in the UK.

The United fan is now a member of our Disabled Supporters Association and he hit the news last Friday after receiving a message from Kevin Sinfield, the rugby league legend who has captured the nation's hearts with his fundraising for former team-mate and MND sufferer Rob Burrow.

The video was played to Jordan by United captain Harry Maguire and featured this key message from Sinfield: “Jordan, I have heard your story, I have heard all about you.

“You are an amazing guy. Just like my mate Rob, you have inspired everyone who knows you with your fight, courage and bravery. You are a true champion.”

Jordan, through a computer he uses to communicate, responded: “Thanks for your message, Kevin. As you can see from my reaction it meant a lot to me. The work and effort you are putting in to raising funds for (those with) the illness and raising awareness is absolutely unreal. We all appreciate everything you do. Let’s get you that well-deserved knighthood.”

Sinfield has accepted an invitation from Jordan and his dad to join them at Old Trafford to watch United next season.
