Who will be our Players' Player of the Year?

Monday 22 May 2023 15:30

It is always fascinating when the dressing room has its say on awards night and this year will be no different when the Manchester United Players' Player of the Year is announced.

There are bound to be a number of names in the frame, considering the positive season Erik ten Hag's men have enjoyed during his first term in charge.

The  players who are expected to top our fans' poll for the Sir Matt Busby trophy will be among the favourites in this category too.

But a look back at the roll of honour shows that the recipient of the supporters' accolade doesn't always make it a double.

David De Gea receives the Players' Player of the Year award in 2018.

Only two men in the last decade have achieved this feat - David De Gea has done it three times (in 2013/14, 2014/15 and 2017/18) and Luke Shaw was a dual winner in 2018/19. Both can have strong claims to the trophy again this time around.

De Gea won it last year, receiving the acclaim of his team-mates for the fourth time since joining the club from Atletico Madrid in 2011.

Anthony Martial, in 2019/20, is the only other current Red to have won the award. Recipients in the past 10 years also include Antonio Valencia (twice), Chris Smalling and Michael Carrick.

Bruno Fernandes, twice the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, has yet to receive the team-mates' award but he could prove popular among his peers this season.

Marcus Rashford is another obvious front-runner, as he leads the goalscoring charts and has had surely his best-ever campaign on a personal level. Surprisingly, the forward would be the first homegrown victor since the year of its inception, 2005/06, when Ryan Giggs took the plaudits.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez would become the first Red to scoop the accolade in their debut season if they are successful.

Earning the appreciation of your colleagues must be a special experience for one lucky Red on the awards night, which is now only a week away.

There will also be a Players' Player of the Year for the women's team, whose last-gasp win against Manchester City has taken the WSL title race to the final day.
