Bruno: We'll learn from this

Thursday 13 May 2021 23:28

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes delivered an honest assessment after the Premier League defeat to Liverpool.

In Harry Maguire's continued absence due to injury, our Portuguese playmaker captained the Reds against our arch-rivals on Thursday night. Unfortunately, it ended up being an evening to forget for United, despite our no. 18 firing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team ahead in the 10th minute.

After the disappointing 4-2 defeat, Bruno delivered some interesting analysis in his post-match interview.

"We played side to side, we tried to do what we trained at. When you go down, playing 45 minutes against a team like Liverpool, we tried to push a little bit more and create danger," Bruno told MUTV.

"We gave more space to them, and they took that space and we conceded another two goals. Everyone was disappointed in the dressing room because we made mistakes but we'll learn from that and we have to keep improving. We are not at our best yet."

The evening began so well for United when Bruno, on his 50th league appearance for the club, fired a shot towards goal which deflected off Nat Phillips into his own net. However, two goals towards the end of the half made sure the Merseysiders went into the break ahead.

"We started well, we score, we created more chances after that," the 26-year-old said about his bright start.

"After we concede… We concede two goals from set-pieces and we know we have to work on that. We concede many goals this season from set-pieces. As I said, we are disappointed in the dressing room and we have to improve, we have to be better and we have to do it in the next game against Fulham to secure second place."

After Roberto Firmino scored his second goal and Liverpool's third, Marcus Rashford replied with 25 minutes to go to halve our deficit and we gave it our all in pursuit of an equaliser.

However, Mohamed Salah put the game to bed in injury time, with a breakaway effort.

"We score and we try to push a little more but that’s it," Bruno said about chasing the levelling goal.

"We gave more space and we conceded the fourth goal, this time on the counter. That’s it, it’s frustrating because we know, we're trying to win the game but it was not enough.”

A disappointing night for the Reds as the Merseysiders take all three points at Old Trafford.

Although it was a night of dismay for the Reds in the end, Bruno was proud to wear the captain's armband for the first time in the league. The Portuguese magnifico of course led the team out when we beat Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc de Princes in the Champions League earlier this term.

"I think everyone knows it’s the biggest honour to have the armband in the game for the club.

"I’m another one. I am proud of that. As I said, like after Paris, it’s a dream come true."

Bruno's goal was his 28th in all competitions this season and no Premier League midfielder has ever scored as many in a single campaign.

We pick out some of the facts and figures arising from a tough clash with our arch-rivals.

Focus now turns to our next game, against Fulham in the Premier League on Tuesday 18 May. Up to 10,000 fans will be allowed back into the Theatre of Dreams and Thursday night's skipper is keen to put on a show in front of our supporters.

"The confidence has to be high, we know what we have done earlier in the season," Bruno emphasised when asked about the run-in of the season, which also, of course, includes the Europa League final.

"After a defeat, it hurts a lot. We have to understand, we have to learn from this and not be afraid in the next game to do something. We have to keep improving. We know we are not at our best yet. It’s time to improving, keep improving and now improving from the mistakes we made today in the next one."
