Anthony Martial celebrates.

Robson: Martial can be a United great

Anthony Martial can become one of the Premier League's greats if he can keep his current form going, says Manchester United legend Bryan Robson.

The 22-year-old French international was in great form last month, scoring four goals in three league games, including the winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Everton. Good performances throughout the month secured Martial the Player-of-the-Month award for October, beating team-mates Victor Lindelof and Paul Pogba with 76 per cent of the final vote.

Robbo believes that what we've seen from Martial in recent weeks underlines his potential to become one of the best players in the Premier League, and has urged the forward to keep his form going.

“For me, over the last month we’ve seen the real Martial, where you expect him to be, because he’s got so much talent”, the former Reds skipper told ManUtd.com. “He’s had a terrific month and hopefully he can continue that all the way through the season now.

“Mentally, Martial just needs to get that little bit stronger to make sure he can do it week in, week out and not just have a good period for one month, then dip in form for a couple of months and then come back to form."

Bryan Robson says

"Mentally, Martial just needs to get that little bit stronger to make sure he can do it week in, week out and not just have a good period for one month, then dip in form for a couple of months and then come back to form."

Robson continued: “If he can get stronger with his mentality and put performances in like he has been doing week in, week out then everyone will really appreciate him, and he is going to be one of the greats in the Premier League.

“We need it on a consistent basis and then that would be terrific for himself and for Man United.”

'ANTHONY HAS EVERYTHING A UNITED PLAYER NEEDS'

Robson’s belief that Martial has what it takes to become one of the best players in the top flight was echoed by United midfielder Nemanja Matic, who spoke after last weekend's win over Everton.

“Anthony is a great player and he needs to understand that," the Serbian opined. "Sometimes I don’t think he understands how good he is. He is quick, he is good with the ball, he can run. He has everything a Manchester United football player needs. Sometimes I don’t think he understands that."

“If I had his ability with the ball and I was as quick as him then I wouldn’t pass to anyone and I would score every game!

“To be serious, he does need more confidence, and this comes with results. When you don’t have the results, it is very difficult for players to have confidence. If we can get results over the next few games and improve as a team he will show that he is very important for us. If he reaches the top level, he can be one of the best players in the league for sure.”
