Which promoted sides will United face in 2023/24?

Monday 12 June 2023 11:54

Manchester United will face three new clubs in the 2023/24 Premier League season, with Burnley, Luton Town and Sheffield United having been promoted from the Championship.

Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton dropped into the second tier, with the aforementioned trio taking their place.

Burnley and Sheffield United were, of course, last in the Premier League not too long ago, but Luton are looking forward to a first top-flight campaign since 1991/92 - the final season of the old First Division.

Ahead of Thursday's fixture release, get to know the three teams a little better...

BURNLEY

Manager: Vincent Kompany

Last season in PL: 2021/22

Last league match against United: Burnley 1 United 1 (8 February 2022)

Burnley will make an instant return to Premier League football next term, after winning the Championship title and finishing on 101 points. Former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany is the man at the helm for the Clarets and he has masterminded the transition to a free-flowing, attacking brand of football that has been so successful for the north-west side.

Nathan Tella - on loan from Southampton - was Burnley's top scorer, grabbing 17 goals in the second tier. Kompany mixed the youth of players such as Taylor Harwood-Bellis with the experience of the likes of Ashley Barnes and it catapulted them back to the top-flight.

The Clarets lost only three games in the Championship last year, but the Premier League presents a very different test for Kompany - who has never managed in the division - and his players.

LUTON TOWN

Manager: Rob Edwards

Last season in PL: Never played in the Premier League

Last league match against United: Luton 1 United 1 (18 April 1992)

Luton have been on a fairytale journey in the last decade. Having gained promotion back into the Football League in 2014, nine years later the Hatters defeated Coventry City on penalties in the play-off final to return to the top-flight for the first time since 1992.

Back then, Luton were relegated and missed out on the chance to participate in the Premier League when it was launched that same year. Having been beaten in the play-offs in 2022, the Hatters made no mistake under Rob Edwards this time around and they will be the 50th different side United have faced in the Premier League.

Top scorer Carlton Morris finished third in the Championship Golden Boot race in 2022/23, having found the net 20 times, and he contributed the most assists of any Luton player in the division too (7). The Hatters drew a whopping 17 times last term, with only Rotherham United tying as many matches. They did, however, lose only eight times - the second lowest amount in the Championship.

Kenilworth Road is currently undergoing renovation works to ensure it adheres to Premier League standards ahead of next term, such was the Hatters' speedy rise through the divisions. Erik ten Hag's side will find out when we will be making the trip to Bedford when the fixtures are announced on Thursday 15 June, at 09:00 BST.

SHEFFIELD UNITED

Manager: Paul Heckingbottom

Last season in PL: 2020/21

Last league match against United: United 1 Sheffield United 2 (27 January 2021)

Sheffield United have been missing from the top-flight for two years now, and make their return for 2023/24 following a second-placed finish in the Championship last season. Under Paul Heckingbottom, the Blades made Bramall Lane a fortress once more and finished comfortably as runners-up with 91 points.

Having drawn just seven times in the Championship across the season - the lowest tally in the division - it's clear that Heckingbottom's side aren't happy to just settle for a point. This cavalier attitude should provide some superb clashes between the Blades and other Premier League sides in the 2023/24 season.

Iliman Ndiaye's 14 goals and 10 assists in the league last term marks the Senegal international as Sheffield United's danger man, as his partnership with former Swansea striker Oli McBurnie proved fruitful for the Blades in 2022/23.
