Manchester United youngster Charlie Wellens has joined National League side Oldham Athletic on loan until January 2023, after a deal was agreed between the two clubs last night.

It will be a first temporary move for the 19-year-old, who has come through the Reds’ ranks and is currently part of the club’s Under-21s side.

He will now continue his progress in a new environment over the coming months, while being closely monitored and supported by United staff.

Having primarily played as a midfielder in the Reds’ youth teams, Charlie impressed while moving to a full-back position during the 2020/21 campaign and has since featured regularly in that role.

The teenager has played in three of our Under-21s’ four Premier League 2 games so far this term and scored a commendable free-kick in the campaign opener away to Arsenal, last month.
He is now set to continue his development with John Sheridan’s Latics, who have made a mixed start to the league season in the fifth tier, following their relegation from the EFL last term.

Oldham have won two, drawn two and lost two of their opening six matches, most recently defeating Aldershot Town 2-1 on Friday.

Everybody at United would like to wish Charlie the best of luck for the coming months as we follow his progress at Boundary Park.
