Cristiano Ronaldo and Roy Keane.

This isn't great news for fans of United's '90s heroes

Tuesday 10 November 2020 16:44

Peter Schmeichel or Edwin van der Sar, David Beckham or Cristiano Ronaldo, and Eric Cantona or Wayne Rooney? Those are just three of the dilemmas posed to fans in ‘Competition for Places’.

The premise is very simple: you’re the manager and must choose between Manchester United legends of the 1990s and 2000s to form a glittering starting XI. But it isn’t easy by any means…

Just for fun, as we enter the international break, 11 polls went live on Tuesday afternoon that required supporters to choose between some of the biggest and most beloved names in history.

You might be surprised to learn that Team 2000s currently holds a 9-2 lead over Team 1990s! Here, we examine the results so far...

You're the manager and must choose between legends from the nineties and noughties for each position...

GOALKEEPER
We said it wouldn’t be easy and that much is evident in the first position because fans are currently split between the two giants of Old Trafford, with Schmeichel holding a very slight advantage over van der Sar in the voting. Here, you can read how the two ex-Reds met in Denmark last week

DEFENDERS
Gary Neville’s enduring popularity with Reds is leading him to a clear majority over Antonio Valencia in the right-back position, and there are convincing margins in the centre-back positions too.

Nemanja Vidic is holding a huge lead over the great Jaap Stam and his former partner Rio Ferdinand is also on top against Steve Bruce, highlighting their standing among the great defenders in history. At left-back, Denis Irwin is losing out to Patrice Evra - but there’s plenty of time to have your say.
MIDFIELDERS
Becks has got a lot going for him – talent, looks, fame and fortune - so we don’t feel too sorry him, but it’s surprising to see the Treble winner losing so clearly to Ronaldo in the battle for right-wing.

Team 2000s is dominating the rest of the midfield, too, with Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all favoured over Bryan Robson, Paul Ince and Lee Sharpe. Of course, those lads obviously played in the ‘90s throughout their iconic careers, so there’s a kind of moral victory there for Team 1990s.
STRIKERS
Don’t tell Ole, but he’s currently losing his head-to-head poll with the great Ruud van Nistelrooy – although we’re guessing the boss won’t care too much, as he feels your love on matchday.

The final poll in our challenge is perhaps the toughest of them all, with Cantona and Rooney jostling for a place up front. It’s extremely tight and there’s a slight advantage for the club’s all-time leading scorer, but you should never write Eric off… he loves a comeback! Make sure to have your say.
