Ronaldo: We never give up

Our no.7, once again, was United's saviour as the inevitable goalscoring machine equalised with a magnificent volley in stoppage time to make it 2-2 in Bergamo.

That was after he'd initially levelled in first-half injury time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side, following an elegant backheeled assist from Portuguese compatriot Bruno Fernandes, and the goals saw him overtake his Norwegian boss in the club's goalscoring charts.

Cristiano now has 127 strikes for the Reds, to Ole's 126.

Following another special night for Ronaldo, he caught up with BT Sport at the Gewiss Stadium. In his post-match interview, the Portuguese superstar said it was a hard-fought battle against Atalanta, but that the Reds never lost hope of securing a result.

"Well, it was a difficult game," the 36-year-old said.

"When you play in Bergamo against Atalanta, it's always difficult. But we believed until the end and I help my team to get one point and I'm so happy."

It's not the first time Ronaldo has scored timely goals for United in Europe this season.

He netted late winners against Villarreal and Atalanta at home and has thus played a crucial part in United topping Group F with two matches left to play.

"We never give up, we believe until the end," the striker emphasised. 

"It's good, a good result for us I think."

Ronaldo was asked about United going behind early on in northern Italy.

"In the beginning, it was tough," our no.7 acknowledged, before crediting Tuesday's opponents, who he faced several times during his own Serie A spell.  

"We knew Atalanta will do a lot of pressure. They have a fantastic coach, they know what what to do all the time on the pitch. I know, because when I played for Juventus, they were always difficult to play against. But, I think we did our job, we defended well and we had a bit of luck in our hands that I scored a goal but this is football."

Both goals were given after lengthy VAR checks, but the close calls went against the Reds. When questioned about his team's defending, Ronaldo said things will get better.

"It's normal, we have to still improve," he explained. 

"I say many times: we have different players, different systems, the football is different. We have to adapt with each other. We'll take time, so in my opinion we have time to improve and be better."
