De Gea: This is why I am here

Manchester United keeper David De Gea admits he is pleased with his form and confidence after landing our Player of the Month award for November.

The Spain international beat off competition from fellow nominees Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo to land the trophy, surprisingly for the first time since February 2018.

It was just reward for his efforts over a difficult month for the Reds and he has since followed it up by helping the side beat Arsenal and Crystal Palace, including keeping a clean sheet in the 1-0 triumph against the Eagles.

"I’m here just to help the team," our No.1 told us at Carrington. "I try to make saves in the important moments. This is why I’m here, to help the team. At the moment, I’m doing well and helping the team. This is my job.

"To be honest, I’ve been feeling very good since the beginning of the season; very confident and very strong in mind. So, yeah, I’m really happy with the award, of course. Thanks to the fans. Of course, it’s been a difficult few weeks in the club but the last results have been great for us. So let’s keep pushing and keep trying our best."

It may have been some time since he last got his hands on the prize but the long-serving keeper knows how appreciated he is by the supporters.

"It’s been quite a long time," he said, after being nominated a number of times. "Maybe I feel I’ve been very good in some months. But I’m very happy with my form and how I’m playing and how I’m training. Yes, of course, it’s very good when the fans vote for you and decide you are the Player of the Month.

"It’s always good, especially when the fans are behind the players. Like I say, I always try my best for the team and for the club. I try to help from the back, giving my 100 per cent in every training session and in every game. Thanks to the fans who voted for me."
