You'd win nothing with 11 Berbatovs!

Manchester United legend Dimitar Berbatov has spelled out the value of having a combination of technique and physicality within any successful team.

The Reds' interim manager Ralf Rangnick recently commented that there was a need for more aggression and combativeness in the squad, even though there is a great level of technique among the players.

Former striker Berbatov was famed for his flawless ability to master a football but readily accepts more is required when it comes to winning matches.

“If you have 11 Berbatovs, you’re not going to win anything, that is for sure!” Dimitar told us, ahead of his return to Old Trafford for Legends of the North game on 21 May.

“It’s why you need a mix of players, sacrificing for the team, doing the dirty job. Players like this can be in your shadow [when you are a forward] because everybody loves a good goal and special assists, something for the crowd to go wild.

“But most of the time, this is possible only because you have hard-working players behind you, getting the ball and giving it to you and making you look good in a way.”

Berbatov is one of a number of big names to sign up for the Old Trafford charity game against former Liverpool players next month, raising funds for Manchester United Foundation.

The Bulgarian accepts football has changed dramatically, even since he retired in 2018, as was evidenced in the recent Premier League game between Manchester City and Liverpool.

“It's changed and football is changing constantly, from yesterday to today,” he said.

“It’s changed, for sure and now it’s even more physical and more speedy in the way that we see Liverpool and City playing. Sometimes, it’s tactical because, when you have [Jurgen] Klopp and [Pep] Guardiola, for sure, trying to outsmart each other and show who is the bigger man on that occasion.

“Sometimes it can be boring and, sometimes, very entertaining. It depends on the players you have in the team. One thing for sure is that football starts in the brain, that’s where everything starts and everything else follows.”
