Donny van de Beek

Van de Beek voted Man of the Match

Donny van de Beek was voted Man of the Match in Manchester United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Luton Town on Tuesday.

The Reds progressed to the fourth round thanks to goals from Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood, but it was our summer signing who fans picked out as the standout man at Kenilworth Road.

After his goalscoring debut as a substitute in Saturday's 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace, the Dutchman made his first competitive start for the Reds in the third-round tie, and played in a no.10 role.

The 23-year-old linked much of the play for the visitors throughout the game and, in particular, combined well with Mata on several occasions, including a dummy from our no.34 which teed up the Spaniard for United’s first real chance of note on the night.

The duo also enjoyed some neat interplay in the build-up to Brandon Williams being fouled for United’s penalty, which was converted by Mata at the end of the first period.

Donny also came close to scoring himself in the second half, but was denied by a smart save from Luton goalkeeper James Shea.

Van de Beek’s virtuoso display on Tuesday ensured he finished top of the Man-of-the-Match poll in our Official App.

Our summer signing earned 18 per cent of the fans' votes, just marginally ahead of Mata who received 17 per cent. Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard was in third place (15 per cent), followed by debutant Dean Henderson (12 per cent).

The new season is here. Our 2020/21 home and away kits are available now from United Direct.
