Ole Gunnar Solskjaer smiles at full-time after Manchester United beat Luton Town 3-0 away

Solskjaer's verdict on Luton tie

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with the result and much of the performance as his Manchester United side progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Goals from Juan Mata and substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood secured our first win of the season. Mata, on his 200th start for the Reds, opened the scoring from the penalty spot just before half-time, following a foul on Brandon Williams.

Luton Town gave it their all and it took United until the 88th minute to add a second strike, when Rashford scored with a cool finish after going one-on-one with the goalkeeper James Shea. Greenwood grabbed the final goal of the game with a trademark attack, cutting in from the right with a couple of step-overs before slotting the ball home.

Here's what Ole had to say to MUTV following the 3-0 win at Kenilworth Road...

Find out what the boss made of the performance after his side secured progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup...

We're safely through to the next round. Overall, a decent workout?
"Safe and through? It wasn't safe, they made us work hard for it. But that's what we need, we need to get competitive games and minutes into the legs of our players because normally we're in a pre-season after such [a] short training [period] and pre-season games are different, so I was happy with the competitive nature of this game and of course happy to go through because we'll get another chance next midweek to get more match minutes into players."

How important was it to get that goal on the stroke of half-time? Because it wasn't easy to create clearcut chances in the first half...
"Yeah we didn't have too many but there were two or three openings there. Juan had a good chance, it was a good save by the keeper, that was a close one of course but getting the first goal is always important in games."
They always say the mark of a good goalkeeper is when you don't have anything to do and then when you're called upon, you make a save, and he made a big one at 1-0...
"Yeah, you could see it happening, you could see it being set up for the big lad at the back stick and he made a save, Dean. I'm very pleased with his performance both when he had to make the save and also how he voiced the team. And when he's got the ball at his feet he's always comfortable."

Dean Henderson's dream of playing first-team football for the Reds has become a reality.

You had some handy subs to bring on. How pleased are you that they are amongst the goals early on in the season?
"It's great for them to get minutes as well but also goals. I think the first one [scored by Rashford], I like that goal because the ball goes forward and it goes quick. It's not perfect but Mason gets hold of it, leaves it for Marcus and you can see that he's composed in his finishing. And Mason, you see his chance there, he can go inside, he can go outside, he had one other one before when he went with his right, now he went with his left. Of course, it's great for them to get off the mark."

And another trip in round four, Preston or Brighton?
"Yes, we've just been discussing here. Luton wanted Brighton for a short trip and we wanted Preston so let's see what it ends up with."
