Early team news for West Ham v United

Thursday 21 December 2023 15:20

Manchester United trained at Carrington on Thursday, in advance of the weekend clash at West Ham United in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen was again part of the main group, as he looks to push for a return. The Denmark international has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury during the 1-0 win over Luton Town last month and told us he is itching to get back involved.

Amad, who has not played all season, since being injured during the tour of the United States, also took part, as did captain Bruno Fernandes, who is free from suspension after serving a one-match ban in the 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Sunday.

Of course, Erik ten Hag must deal with a fresh absentee due to disciplinary reasons, as Diogo Dalot misses the trip to the London Stadium, following his sending off in the closing stages of last weekend's stalemate.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench on Merseyside and will hopefully have shrugged off the illness issues he has had, with fellow forward Anthony Martial unavailable at Anfield, and the prior fixture with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.

The two changes against Liverpool were Kobbie Mainoo's introduction, in place of Fernandes, and Jonny Evans coming in for injured centre-back Harry Maguire. Another defender, Willy Kambwala, was on the bench for the first time.

Victor Lindelof, Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Mason Mount are others who have been on the sidelines.

WEST HAM'S TEAM NEWS

David Moyes's men were hammered 5-1 by Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday night but some of their star men, including Lucas Paqueta, James Ward-Prowse and Emerson, were rested from the outset.

Ward-Prowse (72 minutes) and Paqueta (57 minutes) did come on in the second half, with in-form Jarrod Bowen scoring the east Londoners' goal.

"We could use the word ‘rotate’ and we’ve not rotated that often, although we did in the really early games in Europe, and, in some of them the performances weren’t that good," admitted Moyes. "We wanted to have a go at the Carabao Cup, we really did, but it does get worrying with the schedule we have. I’m a little worried now for the weekend because a couple of the players played longer than they should have done."

Nayef Aguerd, Maxwel Cornet and Aaron Cresswell were ill, although the latter made the bench.

Alphonse Areola returned in goal, ahead of Lukasz Fabianski, while striker Michail Antonio appears to be a major doubt for Saturday.
