Eriksen itching for first-team return

Tuesday 19 December 2023 12:11

Christian Eriksen is eager to be back on the pitch for Manchester United soon, after returning to first-team training at Carrington.

The Denmark international has missed seven games across all competitions for the Reds, since suffering a knee injury during November’s 1-0 win over Luton Town at Old Trafford.

Eriksen took part in the group session for the first time post-recovery on Monday morning, although it remains to be seen when he can be an option for Erik ten Hag again.

Our no.14 spoke of his frustration at having to spend time on the sidelines, having featured in all but one of our league contests prior to that meeting with the Hatters.

“Yeah, I hope so,” Christian replied, when asked if we’ll see him pull on the red shirt again soon.

“Like you said, it was the first part in training with the team [on Monday] and it felt good, so it’s going well.

“I think it's always annoying to be on the side, no matter for how long and definitely now.

“When it takes a little bit longer than you wished for, then obviously it's hard, but no, I was eager to come back as soon as I could.”

Eriksen has been part of a significant list of absentees for United in recent weeks.

Fellow midfielders Casemiro and Mason Mount have both been missing recently, while Bruno Fernandes was suspended for Sunday's goalless draw at Anfield.

Kobbie Mainoo, our 18-year-old Academy graduate, caught the eye on Merseyside and Sofyan Amrabat and Scott McTominay have also been regulars in the XI.

Christian Eriksen has scored against Nottingham Forest and created goals for two other Reds this season…

The Reds take on West Ham United at the London Stadium next, on Saturday (23 December), and Ten Hag could provide an update on Eriksen at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

For now, the former Ajax and Tottenham midfielder is fully focused on making himself available for selection.

“[We need] to make sure that everyone is personally fit and ready to go and then the manager obviously will take the decision,” he added. “The first aim though, is to be back, definitely.”
