Toone: I'll learn from red card

Monday 13 February 2023 15:47

Manchester United Women midfielder Ella Toone has made an honest response to being shown a red card in Sunday's win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Our no.7 was sent off by the referee, late in the contest at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, following a coming together with Spurs midfielder Eveliina Summanen, who was seen holding her face following the incident.

The Reds went on to hold out and win the game, with a player less, and following full-time, Toone responded with professionalism and passion via social media, writing: "[I] pride myself on the passion and love I have when playing for this club.

"[I] hold my hands up for my reaction and I'll learn from it. Proud of the team."

Head coach Marc Skinner was supportive of Toone post-match and welcomed the desire that Ella displayed in her performance.

“We want our players to show passion, commitment, energy," the boss told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

“When you hold your face [in the way Summanen did], it’s play-acting in my opinion.

“Obviously with Ella, we’ll look at that. But we’ll not put Ella in a position where… I want to see that from her, I want to see passion in our players, commitment, and there’s a little bit of play-acting there.

“It’s something we’ll work on internally, of course, we have to be accountable but you need a little bit of help from other players as well.”

Skinner also suggested in the interview that he will look into appealing Toone's red card.

If the suspension is upheld, Ella will miss our next three games, including a crucial clash with title rivals Chelsea in March.
