Can Toone add to her Wembley record?

Wednesday 10 May 2023 15:30

Ella Toone knows what it's like to score on the big occasion at Wembley Stadium.

The United Women forward netted for England in both the European Championship final win over Germany and the Finalissima victory over Brazil, helping the Lionesses to claim landmark pieces of silverware.

Now more history beckons, with Marc Skinner's side preparing to take on Chelsea in this weekend's Vitality FA Women's Cup final at Wembley - United's first-ever participation at the national stadium.

United, of course, still lead the way in the WSL too and we could be just three wins away from a Double triumph.

The Debate | Ex-United Women goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain feels we might have an advantage before the FA Cup final...

Discussing Sunday's meeting with the Blues, former England and United goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain featured on our most recent episode of The Debate.

She touched upon Ella's impeccable form and highlighted her Wembley record.

“You speak about Ella Toone there and she has been a bit quiet in the last few games,” began the BBC pundit. “But on Sunday, in the first half, I think it was one of her best performances in the last few years.

“She was absolutely brilliant and Ella Toone at Wembley, normally in an England shirt but she loves a goal at Wembley. I am sure she would love to get one in a Manchester United shirt.”

Toone has already scored three goals and registered eight assists for United this term, but is yet to get off the mark in the Women's FA Cup.

Returning to familiar territory could prove a vital extra boost on Sunday, with a sell-out crowd set to watch the game live.

“I think it’s finding those pockets of space and getting on the ball and being brave [enough] to make something happen,” said our no.7 earlier this term, following her Finalissima strike.

“I try and get on the ball and create things in the final third.

“I think from both managers, it has given me the freedom and have confidence and belief in me to go out there and show what I can do.”
