Ten Hag explains United line-up

Thursday 23 February 2023 19:02

Erik ten Hag has made only one change from the Manchester United XI that started the first leg of the Europa League play-off in Barcelona.

The boss has recalled Lisandro Martinez after he was suspended for the Nou Camp clash, which finished 2-2 to leave things delicately poised for the Old Trafford return.

The World Cup winner replaces Luke Shaw beside Raphael Varane, with Shaw shifting to left-back and Tyrell Malacia named among the substitutes, alongside the likes of Marcel Sabitzer, Scott McTominay and fit-again Antony.

It looks like a fluid frontline again and there is every chance Wout Weghorst will drop deeper to allow Marcus Rashford to push into central areas, with Bruno Fernandes also capable of performing on the right, as he has done recently.

"I think Ty [Malacia] played, last week, a good game as well," Ten Hag told BT Sport. "But Licha [Martinez] gives you so much belief in the team, also with that fighting spirit; that is very useful."

In terms of rotating positions across the midfield and attack, that is something we can expect to see as the tie pans out.

"Definitely, we will, again, make that rotation," he added. "We have to see what they are doing. Normally, Barcelona are very proactive with a high defending line and they give a lot of space away in the back of the defending line. You know we are good at that, we have to explore those spaces but you have to invest. You have to make those runs."

The manager also had a word about Weghorst and his contribution in a deeper role in recent outings.

"I think everyone can see," he said. "Of course, if you see his stats in all the leagues he's playing, he was scoring goals. I am sure it will come. At the start of the season, Rashy [Rashford] didn't score all that much so, also, it will come. He has a lot of chances and it's about feeling. All of a sudden, he gets one and there can be more.

"Until that moment, he also has other contributions, like making a lot of space for others. What he is doing out of possession is magnificent."
