Ten Hag explains United XI to take on Tottenham

Saturday 19 August 2023 16:30

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has selected an unchanged line-up for our Premier League visit to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (kick-off 17:30 BST).

The same eleven Reds who started at Old Trafford on Monday evening, in the opening 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, will do so in North London where the hosts are playing their first competitive home game under new manager Ange Postecoglou.

Lisando Martinez has therefore lived up to Ten Hag's pre-match assessment that he would be fit to face Spurs, despite being withdrawn at half-time in the Wolves game. The Argentinian will be alongside fellow World Cup winner Raphael Varane, the former France international, at the centre of United's defence while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw again operate as the full-backs.

Behind them, Andre Onana continues in goal after keeping a clean sheet on his Premier League debut.

Recently appointed club captain Bruno Fernandes is in midfield with Casemiro and Onana's fellow summer signing, Mason Mount. The front three again features Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Antony.

There is one change to United's substitutes with a second goalkeeper, Radek Vitek, replacing Harry Maguire who is unavailable due to a minor injury.

On the bench for the second consecutive game are Dean Henderson, Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Jadon Sancho, Facundo Pellistri and Anthony Martial.
Meanwhile, Spurs boss Postecoglou has made two changes to the side that started their 2-2 draw against Brentford last weekend.

Spanish defender Pedro Porro replaces Emerson Royal at right-back, and Senegal international Pape Matar Sarr starts instead of Oliver Skipp in midfield.

In only their second game after the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, the hosts' attack will again be spearheaded by Brazil star Richarlison.

The Reds arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of our maiden away fixture of the season...

When asked on Sky Sports if the unchanged XI was designed to give the same players a chance to improve on Monday's performance, Ten Hag admitted:

“Exactly. And that is also nothing against the ones we didn't pick, who didn't come into the selection.

“I think many players had a really good pre-season, but the players we selected on Monday and now again, they can do much better than they did on Monday. I hope they are much fresher, and dealing better with the ball. Then we will be more comfortable and more into the game.”
On Maguire's absence from the matchday squad, Ten Hag told MUTV:

“Harry picked up a small issue yesterday in the final training session, therefore he could not travel with us.”
