Erik ten Hag has confirmed Manchester United are in talks with Jonny Evans about extending his stay at the club.

The 35-year-old defender, who came through the United Academy and won three Premier League titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, signed a short-term deal with the club in July.

Evans was part of the Reds' squad during pre-season and his future was a topic of conversation during the manager's pre-match press conference for Saturday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur.

When asked about the centre-back's future, Ten Hag offered an insight into the ongoing discussions between the club and the Northern Ireland international.

"No, [Harry Maguire's situation] doesn't affect that," he said.

"We will see. We are in talks and when we have news, we will bring that, as always.

"In this moment, [he’s] not [under a long-term contract]. I have to say, it's a short [deal] for this month, he’s under contract. But we are talking."

While talks are ongoing with Evans, Erik maintained that he is happy with his group of players, adding that the Reds would 'strike' if there was an appropriate opportunity in the transfer market before the window closes on Friday 1 September.

"Our squad is covered," he said. "All the positions are covered.

"But yeah, of course, we are Man United, we are always looking for improvement.

"When there's the opportunity, we will strike also in the last two weeks."
