Why McTominay misses out

Scott McTominay has not been included in the squad for the Champions League game against Atletico Madrid in Spain due to illness, Ralf Rangnick has confirmed.

Scott was one of our standout performers in the 4-2 win over Leeds on Sunday, as he battled away on a wet pitch to help the Reds overcome an early second-half setback to secure all three points.

McTominay shared a picture on Instagram of his battered ankle shortly after that game at Elland Road.

Find out who Ralf Rangnick has selected for tonight's huge Champions League tie in Spain.

The Scotland international has been replaced in the starting line-up in Madrid by Fred, who came on in Yorkshire to score the crucial third goal.

And Scott hasn't made it on to the bench either, although Ralf says this is due to him feeling unwell.

“He's ill unfortunately. I spoke with him this afternoon and he's still not feeling well,” Rangnick said.

“We had a little bit of hope that he might be available.

“So we needed to find the best possible formation and line-up without Scott.”

Fred joins Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in what looks like a midfield three for Rangnick at the home of the La Liga champions.

United have further midfield options on the bench, as Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata are all available to the German.

Youngster Hannibal also makes the squad and it will be a first senior appearance of the campaign if he gets on the field.
