Matej Kovar.

First senior call-up for Kovar

Manchester United's Matej Kovar has been promoted to the Czech Republic senior squad for the first time.

Our Under-23s keeper has been rewarded for his form with a place in the group preparing for Wednesday's international friendly against Ukraine.

His country's official Twitter account explained it was on the back of his clean-sheet performances for the Under-21s against Slovenia and Albania and follows the news that Olympiacos' Tomas Vaclik has picked up an injury.

The 21-year-old saved a penalty in the recent Premier League 2 match with Leicester City, which ended in a 2-2 draw, keeping out Jake Wakeling's attempt in the season opener to continue his impressive record of stopping spot-kicks.

He initially joined the club from FC Slovacko in 2018 and has performed well for the Under-23s.

Last season, Kovar had his first loan away from United, gaining valuable experience with Swindon Town.

He made 21 appearances in total for the Wiltshire outfit in League Two.

Congratulations to Matej on the call-up!
