Goal of the Day: Lingard finishes flowing move

The latest in our 'Goal of the Day' series comes from 2017, when our no. 14 finished off a great team move during our 3-1 win over Arsenal...

Date: 2 December 2017, Premier League

Background: Jose Mourinho’s second season at Old Trafford had started impressively, with the Reds sat in second spot in the Premier League as December began. Ahead of a looming derby with league leaders City, United travelled to the Emirates Stadium looking for a big win against fourth-placed Arsenal. Antonio Valencia secured the perfect start, arrowing the visitors ahead after four minutes, and United’s high pressing game continued to reap dividends thereafter...

The goal: After Jesse Lingard nabbed possession deep in the Arsenal half, Romelu Lukaku surged towards Petr Cech’s goal and slipped the ball to Anthony Martial. As Lingard sprinted past him, the Frenchman executed a breathtakingly adroit pass, perfectly teeing the ball up for Jesse to plant an unerring finish into the net, via the inside of the post.

What happened next: David De Gea took centre stage, repelling attack after attack as the Gunners attempted to heave their way back into the game. Alexandre Lacazette halved the arrears with a close-range finish, only for Lingard to pop up midway through the second period with a tap-in following impressive work from Paul Pogba.

Reaction: “I don't know so many in English but amazing, phenomenal, fantastic,” gushed Mourinho, as his side secured three points which ultimately went a long way towards sealing second place and Champions League qualification.
