Goal of the Day: Martial announces himself

Thursday 05 December 2019 10:51

On Anthony Martial's 24th birthday, our latest 'Goal of the Day' is his famous debut strike against Liverpool in September 2015...

Date: 12 September 2015, Old Trafford, Premier League

Background: United were looking to bounce back against fierce rivals Liverpool after a 2-1 defeat at Swansea last time out in the Premier League. Louis Van Gaal’s side were in complete control following goals from Daley Blind and Ander Herrera, until Christian Benteke’s late, acrobatic effort gave the away side renewed hope of a comeback. However, United debutant Anthony Martial wrapped up the victory in style just two minutes later...

The goal: Bastian Schweinsteiger pinged a fine, outside of the foot pass towards the left wing and Ashley Young helped the ball on to Martial, leaving Liverpool’s defence stretched and out of position. The young Frenchman capitalised on the space ahead of him as he darted forward, weaving his way past Martin Skrtel and Nathaniel Clyne, before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom right corner. The Stretford End erupted at the sight of the Old Trafford debutant’s stunning individual effort.

What happened next: Victory assured, Martial’s bright start to life at United continued as he netted a brace on his first Premier League start against Southampton in a 3-2 win two weeks later.

Reaction: Our French striker recalled the importance of his debut strike during an interview with United Review in March 2018: “That was a very big game, both for me and the team. I think it’s my most important goal so far. It’s the goal that really announced my arrival and the goal that gave me that strength to be able to establish myself at United from the word go.”
