Goal of the Day: Pogba sinks Swans

Today's 'Goal of the Day' is a spectacular effort from our central midfielder in South Wales, back in 2016...

Date: 6 November 2016, Liberty Stadium, Premier League

Background: United had made a slow start to life under new manager Jose Mourinho, travelling to South Wales without a Premier League win in five matches, fresh from a Europa League defeat at Fenerbahce and with the manager serving a touchline ban. Defeats in our previous two visits to Swansea added further to the slight trepidation, although Swansea’s poor recent form did at least offer some hope.

The goal: And hope prevailed. United struck three times within 33 minutes to stun Bob Bradley’s side, silencing the noisy locals into the bargain, with the pick of the goals being Pogba’s stunning opener. Mike van der Hoorn’s headed clearance only found the lurking Frenchman, who allowed the ball to bounce before letting fly with an arrowed right-foot shot high into the top corner.

What happened next: Six minutes later Zlatan Ibrahimovic fired in another long-range effort, then combined with Wayne Rooney to score again in the 33rd minute. Van der Hoorn grabbed a consolation in the second half but the Reds saw out a comfortable 3-1 win that could have been far more convincing but for spurned chances.

Reaction: “It was one of the best goals I’ve scored,” said Pogba in his post-match interview. “I hope I can score more goals to help the team. We needed to win and that’s what we did.”
