How Burnley shaping up for Wednesday's tie with United

Burnley go into Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie with Manchester United at Old Trafford off the back of another important win in the Championship.

The second-tier leaders came from behind on Saturday to defeat Middlesbrough, managed by United legend Michael Carrick, 3-1 at Turf Moor.

A strike early in the second half from Boro’s Duncan Watmore had put Carrick’s visitors ahead, but three goals in 12 minutes – two from Manuel Benson and a Jonny Howson own goal – ensured that the Clarets took all three points ahead of Wednesday’s trip to United.

Full-back Connor Roberts – who has recently returned from representing Wales at the World Cup – will miss the midweek clash however, after he was shown a red card having been judged to handle the ball on the goal line, late on. It saw Middlesbrough awarded a penalty that was saved.

It is unknown if winger Anass Zaroury will return from his recent exploits with Morocco in time, although speaking last week, manager and former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany was hopeful the 22-year-old would be back from the African nation's post-tournament formalities to be involved at Old Trafford.

In their first season under Kompany, Burnley have made a strong response to their relegation from the Premier League in the summer.

At the halfway point in their league campaign, the Clarets sit six points clear of second-placed Sheffield United at the top of the Championship in their bid for an instant return, albeit the Blades have a game in hand.

Since losing to the Yorkshire outfit last month, they have won each of their last four matches, scoring three in every one.
The first of those was a 3-1 triumph over Crawley Town in the third round of the League Cup, before defeating local rivals Blackburn Rovers 3-0 less than a week later, in their final game before the World Cup break.

The Championship resumed from its hiatus earlier this month, with Burnley winning away at QPR, before defeating Middlesbrough on Saturday, meaning that they go into Wednesday’s game in strong form.

Find out the latest regarding Erik ten Hag's options for the visit of Vincent Kompany's team in the Carabao Cup.

Their biggest test of Kompany’s reign so far awaits at Old Trafford in two days’ time, and while it’s a ground that they have had success at in their recent Premier League trips (winning one and drawing three of the last six), United have won both of the last two encounters with Burnley on home soil.

The most recent came nearly a year ago when the Reds triumphed 3-1 last December.
