What's happening at United this week?

Monday 19 December 2022 07:45

There's a busy week ahead at Manchester United as our senior men's team return to competitive action on Wednesday night, in the home Carabao Cup tie against Burnley.

We'll also have more reaction from the weekend, looking back on Lisandro Martinez's World Cup win with Argentina as well as the final game of 2022 for our women's team.

Our Under-21s and Under-18s are also in action across the week.

Here's the lowdown on what to expect for the next seven days at United...
The Reds' last competitive fixture was back on 13 November, when Alejandro Garnacho scored the winner at Fulham.
MONDAY

We’re starting the week off by delving into more reaction to the World Cup final, after Lisandro Martinez became the fifth player to win the competition as a current Red.

Away from the action in Qatar, Ander Herrera's appearance on the UTD Podcast has been the talk of social media since we released an extract of him discussing his painful exit from Old Trafford. It's set to make more headlines when the full episode is released in the United App and on ManUtd.com at 17:00 GMT.

Our first game to cover this week will kick off at 19:00 GMT, as our Under-21s take on overseas opponents in the Premier League International Cup. PSV Eindhoven, the club where Reds legend Ruud van Nistelrooy is the current first-team manager, will be the visitors to Leigh Sports Village.

This day is also notable for some club anniversaries. On this day in 1931, the generosity of local businessman James W Gibson and eventual United chairman saved the club during a time of financial woes.

In 1972, George Best rejoined the Reds. Twenty years later, Eric Cantona scored his first-ever goal for us, in our 1-1 draw away to Chelsea.

In 2010, Sir Alex Ferguson become the longest-serving manager in club history when he overtook Sir Matt Busby. Eight years later, in 2018, the club appointed former Reds forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the caretaker boss following the exit of Jose Mourinho.

TUESDAY

The senior men's team's return to competitive action will now be just one day away, as we step up the preparations for Wednesday’s game against Burnley in the Carabao Cup. In the meantime, our Under-18s are in action at Carrington on Tuesday afternoon, kicking off against Sunderland at 13:00 GMT.

Tuesday is also the day when the new issue of the club’s official monthly magazine Inside United goes on sale. The January edition has Luke Shaw on the front cover and you can read an exclusive interview with our left-back inside. Eric ten Hag, Marcus Rashford, Christian Eriksen, Alejandro Garnacho and Eric Cantona are also in the new issue, as well as a big feature welcoming back Nottingham Forest as competitive opponents for the first time in nearly 24 years. Inside United is available in shops, at the Old Trafford Megastore and in the stadium on home matchdays, or you can buy your copy online via manutd.com/magazine.

We’ll be wishing a happy birthday to Facundo Pellistri, as our Uruguayan winger turns 21.

WEDNESDAY

Keep an eye out for the latest team news as we look forward to welcoming Burnley to Old Trafford for our Carabao Cup fourth-round tie.

Kick-off is scheduled for 20:00 GMT and you'll be able to follow live updates in the United App and on ManUtd.com, while MUTV will have exclusive pre-match, post-match and half-time shows, as well as radio commentary on the full 90 minutes.

On this day in 1907, Sandy Turnbull became the first-ever player to be sent off in a Manchester derby. Just shy of 90 years later, we saw that special Cantona chip against Sunderland.

In 2008, we won the Club World Cup, beating Ecuador's LDU Quito in the final by a single goal courtesy of Wayne Rooney.
THURSDAY

We’ll have more reaction from the home game against Burnley and if the Reds were victorious, we'll keep a keen eye on the evening's final fourth-round tie between our rivals Manchester City and Liverpool.

On this day in 2018, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of his first game as United's caretaker manager – a comprehensive 5-1 thrashing of his former club Cardiff City.

The day also marks the anniversary of Tommy Docherty becoming the boss at Old Trafford, back in 1972.

FRIDAY

We’ll start looking ahead to our festive fixture that falls closest to Christmas, at home to Nottingham Forest next Tuesday, 27 December.

This is the anniversary of one of Paul Scholes's most memorable goals for the club, a thumping volley away to Aston Villa back in 2006.

We’ll also be wishing former Reds striker Terry Gibson a happy birthday.

SATURDAY

It's Christmas Eve, and while there are no games for us to cover, we'll still be looking forward to the Forest fixture early next week. That will be our first meeting with the East Midlands club since the 1998/99 season when we triumphed 3-0 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day before racking up our record Premier League away win, 8-1.

There were also nine goals scored in a game played on this date in 1898, when the Reds – then named Newton Heath – defeated Darwen 9-0 at one of our old grounds, Bank Street.

SUNDAY

If you think we have never played on Christmas Day, think again! We had a fixture on 25 December as recently as 1957, when the Reds beat Luton Town 3-0 at Old Trafford. The sides met again the following day, drawing 2-2 at Kenilworth Road.

Other matches played on this most festive of dates include two Manchester derbies in 1896 and 1897, both resulting in wins for Newton Heath.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, Reds!
