How your donations are helping UNICEF's vital work in Turkey and Syria

Manchester United's international charity partner, UNICEF, has been undertaking some vital work in Turkey and Syria following the devastating earthquakes there.

Helped by donations from United supporters and the club itself, the organisation has mobilised supplies and services to support the urgent needs of children and families affected by the natural disasters in the two neighbouring countries.

The first earthquake, which had a 7.8 magnitude, struck Turkey and Syria at around 04:00 local time on Monday 6 February. Aftershocks were felt throughout the day, including two further quakes of 6.5 and 7.5 magnitude. Many thousands of people were killed and millions of others have been affected.

Earlier this week, another earthquake of 6.3 magnitude was felt in Hatay, southern Turkey. More people have been injured and killed, and more buildings have collapsed.

UNICEF, which has been a charity partner of United since 1999, is especially concerned for the safety and wellbeing of children who have lost their homes, those who are sleeping rough in freezing temperatures, and those who have been separated from their families. UNICEF is working with the authorities and other groups to identify those children and safely reunite them with relatives.

UNICEF'S RESPONSE IN SYRIA

Because UNICEF already had key life-saving supplies in Syria, it was able to reach people affected within 48 hours of the earthquake. The delivered items included hygiene kits, drinking water and high-energy biscuits.

Health & nutrition – 31,500 people have been provided with health and nutrition supplies and 7,900 children under five have been screened for malnutrition
Safe water & hygiene – UNICEF has provided access to safe drinking water and sanitation to 200,000 people
Child wellbeing – 18,000 children, parents, and caregivers have received psychological first aid
Education – UNICEF is setting up temporary learning spaces and providing education supplies for 50,000 children, and assessing 221 schools for repairs
