Mason Greenwood

How Greenwood overtook Rashford

Thursday 09 December 2021 13:14

Mason Greenwood overtook team-mate Marcus Rashford to create a piece of Manchester United history on Wednesday.

Greenwood’s spectacular scissor-kick fired a much-changed Reds side into an early lead against Young Boys at Old Trafford, in a game which eventually finished 1-1.

It was Mason’s first European strike of the season, but the eighth that the 20-year-old has scored in total in continental competition.

Greenwood is still 10 months away from celebrating his 21st birthday but he is now United’s leading European goalscorer prior to reaching that age, passing Rashford’s mark of seven.

Watch every one of Mason’s continental strikes so far, starting with Astana in September 2019…

Mason struck his first United goal at 17, in a Europa League tie with Astana and added four further efforts in the 2019/20 campaign, one apiece against Partizan Belgrade and LASK and two in a 4-0 thrashing of AZ Alkmaar.

A maiden Champions League goal arrived in October 2020’s 5-0 victory over RB Leipzig, plus another in the Europa League, versus Roma, but the Young Boys screamer now puts Mason out on his own at the head of our Under-21 European scorers list.

Rashford had previously seized top spot from the legendary George Best in 2017, with Marcus’s goals also split between the Champions League (three) and Europa League (four).

All in all, 23 players aged under 21 have scored a goal for United in Europe, ranging from Phil Chisnall in the early 1960s to Amad, who netted against Milan at Old Trafford in March of this year.
