Who will United face in the last 16?

Wednesday 08 December 2021 21:57

Manchester United completed their Champions League group-stage campaign on Wednesday, by hosting Young Boys of Bern at Old Trafford on matchday six.

The Reds had already confirmed our status as winners of Group F with victory in Villarreal on matchday five, but we now face a wait to learn of our opponents in the last 16.

As one of the group winners, United will be one of the seeded teams in the draw, which means we can only face clubs who finished second in their respective groups.

So, when is the draw? And, more importantly, who can Ralf Rangnick's Reds face in the spring?
THE LAST-16 DRAW

The draw for the first knockout stage of this year's Champions League will take place on Monday 13 December.

The event begins at 11:00 GMT, and you'll be able to follow live updates via ManUtd.com and our Official App.
WHO WILL WE PLAY?

We cannot meet Premier League opposition until the quarter-finals, due to UEFA regulations. That rules out Group H runner-up Chelsea, while Liverpool and Manchester City won their own groups, so could not face a fellow group winner like United.

Nor can we play the side that finished second in our own Group F – Villarreal or Atalanta, whose matchday-six fixture will be played on Thursday afternoon after heavy snow in Bergamo.

That leaves a small selection of possible opponents for us at next Monday's draw. The list is as follows:

Atletico Madrid (Spain)
Benfica (Portugal)
Internazionale (Italy)
Paris Saint-Germain (France)
RB Salzburg (Austria)
Sporting Club (Portugal)
United

WHEN WILL THE TIES TAKE PLACE?

The first legs will take place across 15/16/22/23 February, with the second legs scheduled for 8/9/15/16 March. All matches will kick off at 20:00 GMT.

As a seeded team, United already know that the second leg of our tie will take place at Old Trafford, with the first leg played away.

If successful, we will progress to the quarter-finals. The draw for that stage – and indeed the semi-finals – will take place on Friday 18 March.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW?

There is one major thing to remember: the away goals rule is no longer in play during 2021/22.

If aggregate scores are level after 90 minutes of the second leg, the ties will go to extra-time regardless of how many goals have been scored away from home.

Should scores still be level after extra-time, a penalty shootout will take place to determine who progresses.
