How Reds reacted to Martinez's misfortune

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez was withdrawn from our 2-2 draw to Sevilla in the Europa League on Thursday evening after picking up an injury.

After going down with a non-contact issue, there were fears that Licha could have injured his Achilles.

At full-time, however, Erik ten Hag assured fans that while it ‘doesn’t look great’, the area of his issue was not where many thought, adding: “I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday; I cannot say what the diagnosis [is], I prefer to wait and know what it is.”

Players and fans alike have since rallied around the popular centre-back to wish him well in his upcoming recovery period.

Both Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were withdrawn during our Europa League quarter-final first leg.

David De Gea was among the first to extend his support to his team-mate, using the prayer hands and heart emoji to convey his feelings.

Our opponents, Sevilla, also took the time to wish Licha a speedy recovery with the defender looking likely to miss next week’s second leg away to the Spanish outfit.

Former United players Owen Hargreaves and Paul Scholes, on punditry duties for BT Sport, were in agreement that our no.6 will be a significant loss to our backline.

“My thoughts go out to him,” Owen said. “It is the worst feeling ever as a player when you know you’ve done something wrong.

“He is such a fabulous player, [losing him] would be such a huge blow.”

Scholes echoed those thoughts, adding: “He’s going to be a big miss. He has shown real character and leadership skills; a strength and solidness to that back four.”

United fans also rallied around Martinez, with many at Old Trafford chanting ‘Argentina, Argentina’ as he left the stadium on crutches.

Others on social media wished him a ‘speedy recovery’, with one lauding him as ‘vital’ to our side.

Another wrote: “Come back stronger.”

Good luck in your recovery, Licha!
