Erik issues update on Martinez and Varane

Erik ten Hag has issued an update on the status of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, after both centre-backs were withdrawn during the 2-2 draw with Sevilla.

Martinez went down rather innocuously in the latter stages of the match, and was visibly distraught, as the Reds were left with 10 men for the dying moments - having already made all five allotted substitutes.

Licha was sportingly carried off the field by two fellow members of Argentina's World Cup-winning squad, in Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel. But the United defender was then transferred to a stretcher for the rest of his journey back to the dressing room.

Following the match, Erik was asked about the condition of the former Ajax centre-back, and said it is too soon to tell how bad his injury is.

Martinez's injury was a worrying sight for Reds fans, and the defender was helped off the pitch by compatriots Acuna and Montiel.

"We have seen Licha Martinez drop out after a moment," he said to MUTV. "There was no opponent involved so it doesn't look that great but we have to wait. The medical staff have to do their job, to give the right diagnosis."

The topic was also on the tongues of journalists at his post-match press conference, prompting Ten Hag to quash various theories.

“I cannot tell what it is, but is not an Achilles," he said. "I have spoken with him and he is okay and he is calm.

"I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday. I cannot say what the diagnosis [is]. I prefer to wait and to know what it is."

The boss was also asked about Varane, who went down in the first half and played on until half-time, before being replaced for Harry Maguire for the second period.

Ten Hag says he cannot say at this moment the specifics of Rapha's knock, but added: "That injury, he complained [about it] over the last couple of weeks and we have to see how it is now."

Erik could give a further update on the duo in Friday's press conference, ahead of Sunday's trip to Nottingham Forest.
