Preview: United Women v Leicester

Friday 13 October 2023 17:00

Manchester United Women return to WSL action this Sunday, 15 October, with a home game against leaders Leicester City.

Marc Skinner's side drew 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday in our first ever UEFA Women's Champions League game, with the return leg taking place next week in France's capital city.

However, focus quickly switches to domestic duties with Leicester being the visitors to Leigh Sports Village at the weekend.

The Reds will be determined to pick up all three points this time around, after being held 2-2 by Arsenal last time out in the WSL.

Here's all the information you need prior to Sunday afternoon's clash...

HOW YOU CAN FOLLOW THE GAME

United v Leicester at Leigh Sports Village is set to kick off at 12:00 BST.

Sunday's fixture will be broadcast live on MUTV, ManUtd.com and the United App for viewers in the UK and Ireland, with our build-up show starting 30 minutes before kick off.

You will also be able to find updates in our app, including team news, as well as half-time and full-time summaries, followed by a match report.

If you are planning to attend the game in person, tickets are still available to buy here

WHAT'S THE TEAM NEWS?

Hayley Ladd and Geyse could be in line to start on Sunday after being named among the substitutes in midweek against PSG. The duo have been in Marc Skinner's XI for our two previous league games in 2023/24.

Melvine Malard could be another option to start after impressing off the bench, with two goals in her last two games against PSG and Arsenal.

Emma Watson is a long-term absentee following the ACL injury she unfortunately picked up last month, while Aoife Mannion is also sidelined. The manager confirmed they are the only United players ruled out, when speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

For the Foxes, one player definitely unavailable for selection is Remy Siemsen, after the Australia forward sustained an ankle ligament problem.

Geyse has impressed during the early stages of her United career.

THE OPPOSITION

Former United Women assistant manager Willie Kirk is in charge at Leicester, who currently occupy top spot in the WSL on goal difference.

The East Midlands club beat Bristol City 4-2 in their league opener before following that up with a 1-0 home victory over Everton last weekend, while they also defeated Liverpool 2-1 on Wednesday in the League Cup.

It's been an impressive turnaround so far under Kirk in the early stages of the new campaign, following the Foxes' 10th-place finish last season.

One player the Reds' backline will need to be wary of is midfielder Aimee Palmer, who was part of our 2018/19 championship winning squad. The 23-year-old has been in fine form this season, with two goals in three games in all competitions.

Finnish midfielder Jutta Rantala and German forward Lena Petermann have also netted two goals each in the early weeks of 2023/24.

Willie Kirk was United Women's assistant manager in the first few months of our inaugural season, 2018/19.

RECENT MEETINGS

In this fixture last season, United put on a fine display to beat the Foxes 5-1. Alessia Russo bagged a hat-trick with further goals from Leah Galton and Lucia Garcia, while Siemsen was on the scoresheet for the visitors.

Our trip to the King Power Stadium in October 2022 ended in a 1-0 triumph for the Reds, courtesy of Nikita Parris's first-half header from Katie Zelem's free-kick.
