Which Reds have been called up?

Monday 30 May 2022 07:00

The next fortnight will see several Reds line up for their nations in World Cup qualifiers, international friendlies, the UEFA Nations League, and Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Over the past week, countries have announced their squads for these upcoming matches, with many United players being named.

Those who aren't involved in the internationals will presumably be among the initial group of Reds Erik ten Hag has confirmed will be back at Carrington at the end of June for pre-season training.

Here’s a breakdown of who has been selected, and what matches to keep an eye out for…

WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

There is one World Cup play-off semi-final remaining: Scotland v Ukraine. This will be played on Wednesday 1 June, with the initial fixture being moved due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

United midfielder Scott McTominay has been named in the Scotland squad and the winning side will progress to the final on Sunday 5 June against Wales. Fellow Red Dylan Levitt has been named in the Dragons' side for the final.

UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE

Wales are also set to take on the Netherlands twice in the Nations League, as well as playing Belgium and Poland across the fortnight of fixtures in a busy spell for Robert Page's side.

Scotland also have Nations League matches against Armenia and the Republic of Ireland to contend with, in addition to the World Cup qualifiers, while 2019 champions Portugal have named three Reds in their ranks for their upcoming fixtures against neighbouring Spain, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic - Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Anthony Elanga, who won his first cap in March, has been called up for Sweden once again alongside Victor Lindelof. Janne Andersson’s side take on Serbia, Slovenia and fellow Scandinavians Norway.

Harry Maguire has been named in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming fixtures against Hungary, Germany, and Italy.

Our captain will be hoping to help England start the tournament well and build up some form going into United’s pre-season.

The final Red representing his country in the Nations League over the next fortnight is France centre-back Raphael Varane.

Les Bleus face Denmark, Austria and their 2018 World Cup Final opponents Croatia in their group and are looking to retain the Nations League trophy, after they defeated Spain in last October's final.

AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS QUALIFIERS

Both Eric Bailly and Hannibal have been called up to represent their respective nations in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

For Bailly, Ivory Coast host Zambia at home, before travelling to Lesotho in Group H. Ivory Coast will stage the next tournament in 2023, so have already confirmed their place but will play in the qualifying games regardless.

In Group J, Hannibal’s Tunisia face matches against Equatorial Guinea and Botswana in the first round of qualifiers for the next African Cup of Nations.

KIRIN CUP

Tunisia also have Kirin Cup fixtures to contend with over the upcoming international break. The Kirin Cup is a competition between four teams which is organised by the Japanese brewing company, Kirin.

This year, Japan, Tunisia, Chile, and Ghana are the four teams participating. On Friday 10 June, Tunisia take on Chile in the semi-final in the Japanese city of Kobe.

The winners of each semi-final will play one another, while the losers will have a third-place play-off to determine the final standings. Tunisia will therefore play either Japan or Ghana after Chile, depending on the outcome of both semi-finals.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLIES

Nations from the remaining continents will play a series of friendlies during the international break. Fred and Alex Telles have been selected for Brazil, while the departing Edinson Cavani has been named for Uruguay, alongside Facundo Pellistri.

Across the next two weeks, Brazil face South Korea, Japan, and Argentina, while Uruguay play Mexico, the USA, and Jamaica.
