Stam shouts out an unsung hero of United's history

Manchester United legend Jaap Stam has shouted out an unsung hero of the Reds' history, following a chance reunion at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The popular Treble winner was at pitchside for the weekend’s Premier League win over Everton as part of his punditry role with Dutch broadcasters.

While at the Theatre of Dreams, Stam bumped into Sir Alex Ferguson’s former kitman and trusted ally Albert Morgan, who is now a club ambassador.

Stam worked closely with Morgan during his three full seasons at the club, between 1998 and 2001, and has not forgotten all of the endeavour, behind the scenes, that helped the squad.
When posting the above photo to Instagram, Jaap wrote a complimentary message about his friend and former colleague.

“Always a pleasure to meet up with this amazing person, former kitman of United, Albert Morgan!

“Someone that is truly dedicated, honest, professional in everything he does.

“The standard you need to win trophies!”
LASTING FRIENDSHIPS

Morgan remains a popular figure among our ex-players and, as he explained during a UTD Unscripted long read in 2020, it was easy to form relationships with such great characters.

“We’ve been blessed at the club with the players that we’ve had,” wrote Albert. “Fabulous people. The boss used to scrutinise not only how they could play, but also finding out about their characters, their families, their agents, their hangers-on.

“He went into the background and if there was any doubt at all, he wouldn’t sign them, no matter how good the player was. He wouldn’t take the chance because you don’t want any bad apples. So you end up with the best kind of characters in your club.”

In an emotional long read, former kit man Albert Morgan shares insights and anecdotes from his friendship with Sir Alex.

IT’S ALL ABOUT TRUST

As somebody who was in the dressing room for decades, during the club’s most successful period, Morgan has a raft of amazing stories – but most of them stay in the dressing room.

“People always say to me that I should write a book,” he told us in 2020. “Almost every day, I’d speak to people and get the same line: ‘You should write a book. You could do a book.’

Albert Morgan - Incredible Tales of a Kit Ma‪n

 podcast

This week we have our first guest who hasn't been a Manchester United player. Albert Morgan was the club's long-serving Kit Manager, working closely with Sir Alex Ferguson for 20 years. Albert joined the Pod and had everyone in hysterics with his incredible tales from inside the Old Trafford dressing room. Pranks, burst sewer pipes, and what the United superstars were really like behind the scenes. Albert made sure everything was perfect pre-game for the likes of Eric Cantona, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. Although there were one or two high-profile mistakes along the way...

“Yes I could. I could do 10 books. But you do these things, and they get twisted, spun so what would be the point? I want to be able to walk into Old Trafford until the day I die and have people let on and be comfortable chatting to me.

“Once you have the trust of people like Sir Alex Ferguson, you don’t betray it. That’s more valuable than anything you could sell.”
