Groenen and Netherlands knocked out of Euro 2022 by France

Manchester United midfielder Jackie Groenen has seen her Euro 2022 journey come to an end after an agonising 1-0 defeat for the Netherlands at the quarter-final stage.

The defending champions were knocked out of the competition by France after extra time at Rotherham’s New York Stadium, as a result of Eve Perisset’s 102nd minute penalty.

Groenen played all 120 minutes of a gruelling tie that could only be settled by a spot-kick, which Dutch keeper Daphne van Domselaar did get her fingertips to but couldn’t stop from going in.

The result not only ended the reigning champion’s run in the tournament, but also meant Les Bleus reach the semi-finals for the first time in their history.

Our commiserations to Jackie following Saturday's result.

Reflecting on his side’s performance, Dutch boss Mark Parsons told BBC Sport: "I am unbelievably proud of the players and the staff, you saw the players give everything. There is not a player with an ounce of energy left.”

He added: "For us, continuing to build this special group that is forming, the future is bright, and I wish we could have shown that a bit more in this tournament - that wasn't meant to be."

WHO IS IN THE LAST FOUR OF EURO 2022?

Completing the semi-final line-up, France will play Germany in Milton Keynes on Wednesday (20:00 BST) as they try to continue breaking new ground for the country at the Euros.

Meanwhile the winner of that tie will face either hosts England or Sweden in the final at Wembley next Sunday – with Reds Mary Earps, Ella Toone and Alessia Russo all having played their part in the Lionesses four victories so far.

The two sides will face off at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane on Tuesday night (20:00 BST).
