Joe Hugill's smooth introduction to life at Manchester United has been reflected by his inclusion on the shortlist for October's Premier League 2 Player of the Month.

The striker, who signed from Sunderland during the close season, is still eligible for the Under-18s but has been pushed into Neil Wood's Under-23s squad ahead of schedule.

Hugill is hoping to succeed another former Black Cats forward in Sam Greenwood, who won September's award after shining with his new club Leeds United.

The 17-year-old opened the month with both goals in the 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers, the first early on and the second a predatory finish for an 87th-minute equaliser.

He was on the scoresheet again when six goals were shared with Arsenal in another entertaining match on the road and helped the team overcome Everton 2-1 when coming on at half-time for Marcos Rojo at Leigh Sports Village.

The six players shortlisted for the award were nominated by the Premier League's Football Development Panel after Premier League 2 club coaches picked out the best performance by an opponent in league matches throughout October.

The panel will also decide the victor, which will be announced in due course.
