Mourinho shoots down reports about sales

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has rubbished reports he would decide on any of his players' futures purely on the back of the shock Carabao Cup quarter-final defeat to Bristol City.

The boss explained at his press conference ahead of the trip to Leicester City that it is simply not the way he operates, in response to some knee-jerk stories that appeared immediately after the Ashton Gate setback. It is clear he would never judge any player on one individual performance.

When it was suggested he doubted the motivation of some individuals following the game and this could lead to a decision about any of them, the manager replied:

"No. I don't make decisions based on one game, on one feeling of one night. Not at all. Could I be critical of my players? Yes, I could. But I keep thinking that they did enough to win, they lost when they were trying to win, they lost when they were the only team that people believed could win that match and they lost because it's football.

"So we move on and we move on quickly because, tomorrow [at the King Power Stadium], we have another match."

Mourinho has outlined what he feels are realistic expectations for Leicester this campaign...

Speaking to MUTV’s Mark Sullivan at the Aon Training Complex on Friday, Jose gave this update on his squad ahead of the trip to Leicester. "It is the same," he began. "There is no news.

"Of course, for the game at Bristol we changed a lot of the players, so we managed to give a rest to many of them and especially to the lucky ones that did not travel.

"Because the ones that did travel, even some who did not play, arrived back in Manchester close to 5am. People like Mata or Smalling, who were on the bench, had to travel back."
