Manchester United forward Juan Mata has added another trophy to his illustrious collection, after he was presented with the ‘Queen Sofia’ prize at the National Sports Awards in his native Spain.

The popular 30-year-old was recognised for his work in setting up the charitable project Common Goal, which he founded in August 2017 to help several causes around the world, with the idea that members of the professional football community would donate one per cent of their salaries.

On Thursday, Mata left our warm-weather training camp in Dubai and attended a royal event at El Pardo Palace in Madrid, where he smiled as Queen Sofia herself presented him with a grand trophy.

The award recognizes the person or entity that has made a significant gesture of nobility or fair play during the year.

Juan Mata received his award during a special ceremony at El Pardo Palace in Madrid.
“I'm very proud of receiving this important award in the name of all Common Goal members,” Juan explained after a memorable day in his career. “It's an award that acknowledges the idea we created more than a year ago: a movement from professional football to help people through this sport. This award is an honour and a help towards Common Goal future and its acknowledgment.”

The ceremony was presided over by King and Queen Felipe and Letizia. Joining them were Minister of Culture and Sports, José Guirao, and President of the Higher Sports Council, María José Rienda.

In addition to Mata, personalities such as Rafa Nadal, Sandra Sánchez, Keylor Navas, Jon Rahm, María Vicente and Juan de Dios Román also collected awards.
