Loan Watch: ‘Amazing’ Amad impresses for Sunderland

Amad added to his fruitful loan spell at Sunderland with another impressive performance this weekend against Luton, garnering more applause from Black Cats’ boss Tony Mowbray.

The Ivorian led the line for Sunderland on Saturday, as the Wearsiders travelled south, and played a big role in the 1-1 draw, which saw Elliot John Embleton’s second-half goal cancel out Carlton Morris’s first-half opener.

Following the hard-fought result, Mowbray heaped praise on the 20-year-old United loanee.

“Amad was amazing today, amazing,” said the Sunderland boss.

“Not just the saves he drew from their ‘keeper, but his intensity and aggression to win the ball back.

“I trusted him in central midfield at the end there, which says everything. Really impressive and that’s what he has to do.”

Two other United loanees were also in Championship action, facing each other, as Ethan Laird and Hannibal locked horns at St. Andrews on Friday.

Hannibal came out on top in the fixture, as Birmingham inflicted a 2-0 defeat on Queens Park Rangers.

Two first-half goals were enough to seal the points for the Blues, with Auston Trusty scoring after just four minutes and Emmanuel Longelo - assisted by Hannibal - adding a second just before the half-hour mark. Lyndon Dykes had a chance to halve the deficit in the 79th minute from the penalty spot, but he was thwarted by John Ruddy.

Also in the Championship, Alvaro Fernandez played 86 minutes of Preston North End’s 2-1 home win over Middlesbrough, despite Chuba Akpom opening the scoring for the away side after seven minutes.

Preston levelled before the break through Emil Riis Jakobsen, before Jordan Storey snatched the three points in the dying moments to inflict a defeat on Middlesbrough in United legend Michael Carrick’s first match in charge.

But not all of our loanees were victorious at the weekend, with Dean Henderson suffering a 5-0 loss away to Arsenal with Nottingham Forest, while Alex Telles and Sevilla were beaten 1-0 at home to Rayo Vallecano.
