Loan Watch: Henderson stands firm for Forest

Five of Manchester United’s loanees were in action across various competitions on Tuesday evening.

The first of the midweek Premier League action got under way on the south coast, with Brighton & Hove Albion hosting Nottingham Forest.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson continued his run in Forest’s goal and was forced into making a couple of brilliant saves, as the Seagulls dominated the game but could not find a way through.

A point-blank reaction stop from Pascal Gross in the closing stages was the clear highlight, and manager Steve Cooper was keen to raise the 25-year-old’s contribution following the 0-0 draw, which lifts the East Midlanders off the bottom of the table, at least until Thursday when rivals Leicester City face Leeds United.

“As for Dean, he made a great save,” Cooper said. “I’m really pleased for him to get the clean sheet and he’s worked hard for that.

“I’m so happy that he’s with us.”

Left wing-back Alvaro Fernandez made a seventh consecutive Championship start for Preston North End, as Ryan Lowe’s side got back to winning ways by beating struggling Huddersfield Town 1-0.

Greg Cunningham’s 50th-minute header secured all three points at the John Smith’s Stadium, although Fernandez will be ruing the late miss which prevented him from celebrating a first senior goal.

In the same division, Amad was introduced as a 64th-minute substitute for Sunderland, as Black Cats lost to manager Tony Mowbray’s former club Blackburn Rovers 2-0.

Rovers now top the Championship table, with Sunderland in 12th after five wins, five draws and five defeats from their first 15 games following promotion.

Manchester United Under-21s were, of course, in Papa Johns Trophy action on Tuesday night and so was loanee Ethan Galbraith.

Like the Reds, Salford City were involved in a 2-2 draw which would eventually be settled on penalties, although Galbraith departed the fixture with Rochdale after 61 minutes.

Finally, in La Liga, Alex Telles played the full 90 minutes as Sevilla drew 1-1 with Valencia to maintain their unbeaten start under Jorge Sampaoli.

Former Red Edinson Cavani powered the visitors into the lead with an early header, but Erik Lamela equalised four minutes before the end.
