Revealed: United's Man of the Match against Chelsea

Sunday 28 February 2021 20:28

Manchester United’s 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Sunday may not have been a classic, but it has resulted in our closest-ever Man of the Match poll.

Three players earned 17 per cent of the vote and were separated by just 125 votes following our Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge, the first time a trio have ever topped the poll with the same percentage.

David De Gea, Fred and Daniel James were the men who stood out to our supporters and earned more votes than their team-mates.

David's save earned us a big clean sheet at Stamford Bridge, but he admits we need to turn more draws into wins...

De Gea put in an excellent display in the capital, and made a fine stop from Hakim Ziyech just after the interval to keep the hosts out.

He also made stops to deny Mateo Kovacic and several others during the game, and impressed after being rested in midweek against Real Sociedad.

As for Fred, he put in an industrious shift in the centre of the park and helped United progress with the ball, while snuffing out several potential Chelsea attacks.

Our no.17 also came close to grabbing a goal in the second period when his right-footed shot sailed just wide of the far post.
James was the final player to earn 17 per cent of the vote and caused Chelsea’s defence repeated problems with his runs in behind.

The winger was also repeatedly fouled by the Blues and had the most sprints of any player in the match.

However, it was De Gea who topped the poll with 64 more votes than Fred and 125 clear of James.

It’s the second time the Spaniard has won the Man of the Match vote this season, the first being after his superb display in the 2-1 away win over Paris Saint-Germain in October.
