Man Utd players lift the FA Cup trophy at Wembley

Who was our FA Cup final Man of the Match?

Sunday 26 May 2024 10:08

Kobbie Mainoo was voted Manchester United's Man of the Match after Saturday's FA Cup final victory over Manchester City.

The 19-year-old midfielder capped an incredible debut season as a first-team player with a monumental performance at Wembley Stadium, playing a huge role in our 13th FA Cup triumph.

Mainoo scored what proved to be the decisive goal in the 2-1 win in the closing stages of the first half, doubling the lead earlier given to us by Alejandro Garnacho.

As well as applying the finishing touch to Bruno Fernandes's superbly subtle assist, the England youngster was calm, composed and played with the kind of maturity that underpinned his accomplished displays throughout the campaign.

Mainoo, named in Gareth Southgate's preliminary Euro 2024 squad for the summer ahead, took 44 per cent of our fan vote after his excellent performance on the big stage.

Having laid on that glorious second goal with incredible vision and deception, it's no surprise our skipper Bruno gained appreciation, coming in second with 20 per cent.

Fans were also impressed by Garnacho, whose ruthless opener capitalised on a defensive mix-up and set the Reds on the way to glory. Eleven per cent of the vote went to our young Argentinian.

There was also recognition for Sofyan Amrabat's contribution as the steely shielding force in midfield, with 10 per cent.

Scoring in an FA Cup final at Wembley is such a surreal experience that Mainoo had little recollection just after the final whistle of what actually happened.

"To be honest, it was such an amazing moment I can't even remember it!" he told ITV. "I remember making a run and sliding it into the corner - that's about it. The quality [Bruno] has, he sees things no one else can. I tried to shout him and didn't know if he could hear me, but he just found me in the right spot and I was able to finish it.

"The FA Cup is such a historic trophy and to have done it in this game, in a derby, there is nothing sweeter."

Congratulations to Kobbie for winning and thank you to everyone who voted.
