Bruno: We earned the right to go up the Wembley stairs

Saturday 25 May 2024 21:13

Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United had to suffer and sacrifice to be the team that made the winners’ walk up to Wembley Stadium’s Royal Box at the end of the 2024 final.

Fernandes and co proudly hoisted aloft the prestigious trophy while overlooking the national arena, following a thrilling 2-1 victory over crosstown rivals Manchester City.

The scoreline is a reverse of last season’s corresponding fixture, when the Reds were beaten by the odd goal in three and, speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Bruno expressed his satisfaction at ending what has been a “difficult” campaign on a positive note, by avenging that defeat.

“It’s a long season, it was difficult,” Fernandes said, after the final whistle.

“It was our last chance to get something positive from the season. We’ve been here last year, we were not good enough go up the stairs and lift the trophy, so we had to see them doing that. This season is the other way around.

“We played a great team. They have great qualities, great players, a great manager. We had to go there to suffer. We had to sacrifice, but we also had to put some quality into the game. And we did great things.”
The quality that our skipper speaks about was produced all over the park by the men in red shirts, not least by our goalscorers on the afternoon, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo.

Garnacho made an impressive cameo appearance in last year’s derby at Wembley, but for Mainoo, Saturday’s win was his first taste of an FA Cup final.

Our no.37 scored the eventual match-winning goal, to cap off what has been a breakthrough individual campaign for the young midfielder, who Bruno has a high level of admiration and respect for.

“He's really good. He's such a such a quality player,” Fernandes continued, while speaking to BBC.

“You see the composure that he had in the finishing. But part of the DNA of this club is the young players who come through the Academy onto the biggest stage in the world. They showed it again.”
