United Academy awards to be presented tonight

Thursday 25 May 2023 18:01

Manchester United will hold a pitchside ceremony this evening to crown both the Under-21 Player of the Year and Under-18 Player of the Year for 2022/23.

The prestigious trophies named after Jimmy Murphy and Denzil Haroun will be handed out at half-time, during our Premier League clash with Chelsea.

Our Under-21 and Under-18 teams completed their 2022/23 fixtures earlier this month and there is much to be proud of as we look back across the Academy season, not least in the key area of individual player development and education.

Ten Hag: Let's get the job done tonight

In our exclusive Q&A, Erik urges his team to use "our fortress" to clinch a Champions League place against Chelsea.

Many young Reds enjoyed the opportunity to train with Erik ten Hag's first team, and numerous Academy players travelled to Spain last December as part of our winter training camp, while the campaign paused for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Last year, the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award was won by winger Alejandro Garnacho, who has enjoyed a fruitful first full season in the senior squad. The Argentinian forward has scored six goals and has also provided six assists in all competitions so far.

Murphy, our legendary assistant manager during Sir Matt Busby's era, was recently immortalised at Old Trafford when a statue was unveiled. His hard work and dedication, particularly following the tragic events of the Munich Air Disasterin 1958, will never be forgotten.

The Denzil Haroun Under-21 Player of the Year award was presented to Alvaro Fernandez last year and the Spanish full-back has since spent all of this season on loan at Championship club Preston North End, for whom he made a total of 42 appearances.

Haroun was a former director at the club, and the trophy in his name was first given to striker Mark Robins back in 1990. Robins is now manager of Coventry City and is one game away from steering the Sky Blues back into the Premier League, with their play-off final against Luton Town due to be played this Saturday at Wembley.

Match-going fans are invited to watch the half-time ceremony from their seats and applaud this year's Academy award winners. A video of the presentation will be available to watch on demand later, via ManUtd.com and the United App.
