Reds announce side and reach milestone

Manchester United, as expected, hit the 4,000-game milestone of having at least one youth-team graduate in the matchday squad when three were named in the team and four on the bench for the home game against Everton.

The Reds welcome the Toffees to Old Trafford after picking up morale-boosting wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, and now have a chance to close the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea to two points, following the Blues' surprise home loss to Bournemouth.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has named the same team and subs from the 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.

In terms of the homegrown players, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford start, with Axel Tuanzebe, Brandon Williams, Andreas Pereira and Mason Greenwood, who scored twice against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night, on the bench. One of our 2011 FA Youth Cup winners, Michael Keane, is in the visitors' line-up.

It is the first time since January 2009 that United have not included a former Everton player in the matchday squad for the home Premier League clash with the Merseysiders.

Duncan Ferguson takes charge of the visitors for the second time, following the departure of Marco Silva. The Scotsman was often a scourge of the Reds in his playing days and masterminded a 3-1 triumph over Chelsea last time out.

"It shows the club’s belief in the whole process and that we are good at identifying them, good at coaching them and they have stickability that they go all the way through," Ole told MUTV about the homegrown statistic. "If they are good enough, they should be given a chance.

“Let’s just make sure we have a good performance and earn the right to win the game because that is always going to be the main thing now - that we keep on having consistent performances that, in the end, if we put them in, we will move up the table.”
