Solskjaer insists United will put this right

Manchester United may have missed out on the chance to move into third place in the Premier League but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he has no worries about his team's mentality.

The Reds were holding on to a 2-1 lead against Southampton at Old Trafford when Michael Obafemi plundered a 96th-minute equaliser for the visitors.

The goal keeps United in fifth place, despite extending our unbeaten run to 18 games, ahead of the crucial run-in.

Ole believes the players will learn a harsh lesson from not seeing the match out but it will stand us in good stead for the challenges to come.

On Thursday, there is a chance to quickly bounce back, at Crystal Palace, before Sunday's Emirates FA Cup semi-final with Chelsea. On the following Wednesday, our home domestic campaign ends with a clash against West Ham United with a trip to top-four rivals Leicester City marking the end of the Premier League season on 26 July.

"I have to say the mentality of the boys has been brilliant," said the manager. "We’ve had a few setbacks over the season, of course, and this is another challenge for us. I’m very confident in the mentality of them.

“I'm very disappointed of course, but you have to take the disappointments, as well as the positives when you win games. Of course, the disappointment with this is when it’s one of the last kicks of the ball and you concede a goal and you lose two points.

“That’s part of football and we’ve learnt a hard lesson, hopefully. We’ll make it right, we’ll put it right. I trust them in that respect."

The boss would not accept the suggestion that United have failed to handle the pressure after rivals Chelsea dropped points on several occasions this season.

"Absolutely not," he replied. "I don’t think any of our players have been thinking about: ‘Oh what have Chelsea done this weekend.’ Not at all. It’s just the way the games go.

“ We all play against the same teams and we all have 38 games to go through and it will even itself out during the long season. You’ll deserve the position you get in the end."
