Nominees show their class against Bournemouth

“I don’t score very often!”

Those were the words of Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw, after the Reds’ comfortable 3-0 victory over Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The defender grabbed the second of our three goals in the Premier League clash just four minutes after half-time, starting and finishing a superb move which began all the way back on the left side of United’s defence.

Shaw put in a commanding display against the Cherries, as did fellow goalscorers Casemiro and Marcus Rashford, who just so happen to be the other two names on the shortlist for our Player of the Month award for December.

While the win over Bournemouth does not contribute to the prize, with it being United’s first match of 2023, all three Reds reminded our supporters of their class, carrying their December form into the new year…

Who is your Player of the Month for December 2022?

LUKE SHAW

After returning from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Shaw found himself in an unorthodox centre-back position, due to injuries and illness to our other options in the middle of defence.

But, as Erik ten Hag said after our win over Nottingham Forest, “it looked like Luke has played there all his life at centre-half.”

United have kept four consecutive clean sheets since the restart, with Shaw playing a key role in all but one of these matches - the 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Burnley. Luke has started each of our previous three fixtures, though, and was reinstated into his regular left full-back role against Bournemouth.

He influenced the match superbly at both ends of the pitch, scoring our second of the match before his pinpoint diagonal pass to Bruno Fernandes allowed the Portuguese midfielder to lay the ball on a plate for Rashford to make it 3-0.

While the game against the Cherries doesn’t count towards the December award, Luke is in a rich vein of form at present, and is beginning to become pivotal to Erik ten Hag’s side in attacking areas as well as in defence.

CASEMIRO

An all-action midfielder who can break up play and score goals is every manager’s dream, and it’s safe to say that with Casemiro in his side, Ten Hag has exactly what is required.

The Brazilian once again showed his quality against the Cherries, opening the scoring in the first half and affecting the game both defensively and offensively throughout.

Casemiro’s consistency and organisation are key reasons why the Reds are on a four-match winning streak at present, and long may that continue.

Our three goalscorers and David De Gea all received plenty of votes, but who won the first accolade of 2023?

MARCUS RASHFORD

Another game, another goal for Rashford. The attacker was in the right place at the right time against Bournemouth to provide the icing on the cake in the latter stages, and the evidence of Marcus’s December form was already enough to stake a claim for the accolade.

After coming back from Qatar late in the month, Rashford scored in all three of the United games he played before the turn of the year.

From an unbelievable individual goal versus Burnley, to a well-worked routine corner against Forest and a match-winning substitute appearance at Wolves, Marcus finished 2022 on a high.

The England international continued that form into the first fixture of 2023, notching against the Cherries to take his tally for the season to 12 goals in all competitions so far this term.
